Chronic enteropathy of dogs and cats is a syndrome with a complex pathophysiology that includes changes in the immune system, intestinal function, and the intestinal microbiome. The many overlapping unspecific features of chronic enteropathy often result from persistent dysbiosis and irreversible changes in intestinal function. The extent of inflammation and dysbiosis varies among patients, and is likely the reason why response to therapy varies from patient to patient.
In this session, Dr. Jan Suchodolski discusses the need to expand basic understanding of gastrointestinal tract physiology, changes in the intestinal microbiome and fecal metabolomics in chronic enteropathy, and why malabsorption may be a more significant driver of dysbiosis than inflammation.
