Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a highly prevalent, important cause of morbidity and mortality in domestic cats. In fact, renal disorders are the leading cause of death for cats aged 5 years and older.

CKD progression is multifactorial, poorly understood, and highly variable. Some cats experience non- to slowly progressive disease while other cats rapidly progress through the CKD stages despite aggressive management. Eight factors and their roles in renal inflammation, fibrosis, and disease progression are discussed during this lecture.
