A growing body of evidence supports the concept of a “gut-kidney axis” in which each organ system influences the other in both health and disease with potentially significant clinical implications. The interactions between the gastrointestinal tract, its microbiota, and the kidneys are relevant to a discussion of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats and constipation.
In this session, Dr. Jessica Quimby reviews what is currently known about the connections among the gut-kidney axis, gut microbiota dysbiosis, dehydration, and constipation in cats with CKD. Recommendations for nutritional and medical management of constipation in cats with CKD are included.
Nutritional interventions tailored to the individual cat with CKD can play a key role in slowing disease progression, reducing signs of uremia, addressing homeostatic changes resulting from CKD, and improving quality of life as well as life span.
Jessica Quimby, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, explains the dangers of dehydration in cats with chronic kidney disease and provides strategies to help owners assess and address cat hydration status.
