Dog and cat foods with higher macronutrient (e.g., protein, carbohydrate, fat) digestibilities are generally considered to provide better nutrition. While digestibilities of fats and starches used in pet food manufacturing consistently reach 90% or higher, digestibility of protein sources is more variable. Many different protein ingredients are used in making extruded pet foods, and they have different levels of digestibility.
A study conducted at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) in Brazil evaluated the effects of apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of extruded diets on fecal dysbiosis index, bacterial taxa, and fermentation metabolites in adult dogs. Dr. Ananda Portella Felix reviews the findings of this study, as well as an overview of ADC with an emphasis on protein ADC.
