Companion Animal Nutrition Summit (CAN) 2018
Senior pets form a large and growing population, so veterinarians are more motivated than ever to increase their knowledge about how best to improve health and longevity for these long-term companions.
The influential factors in aging, from the microscopic to the macroscopic level, were discussed during this year’s event, with topics ranging from the role of the mitochondria, to the impact of minerals and fatty acids, to the importance of dietary protein intake.
In addition to these presentations by outside experts, ongoing research by Purina in gerontology and nutritional science has identified opportunities to support older pets, and sustain the human-animal bond.
This website hosts a range of exclusive scientific content on the topic of gerontology, including interviews with internationally renowned experts, articles and video presentations, with a practical summary of the research to take away and apply in practice, helping veterinarians to provide effective care for older pets.
Quick clips from CAN 2018 lectures will introduce you to new ideas.

Research is revealing how nutrition can impact aging at the molecular level, from mitochondrial turnover to gene expression. Some of these studies need you!
Both pets and people experience age-related weight loss, and this puts them both at higher risk for age-related diseases and mortality. Human studies may improve understanding about how to prevent this loss in dogs and cats... and vice versa.
New research shows there's so much more to pet nutrition than calories and carbs.
An overview of recent research into the complex mechanisms of biological aging and approaches to improving health along with lifespan.
Scientists share how their research results could show up in your exam room.
