Speaker:
Linda Toresson, DVM, PhD, Swedish Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine
Event date: 6–7 November 2024 Virtual Event
Owners understandably want a “quick fix” for their dog’s diarrhea, and this drives their requests for antibiotics. However, a growing body of evidence shows the negative effects of routine antibiotic use to manage dogs with gastroenteritis far outweighs perceived benefits.
Using four cases from her clinical practice, Dr. Linda Toresson explains how microbiome-centric strategies before routinely prescribing antibiotics (unless medically necessary) can improve management of chronic gastrointestinal conditions in dogs. She discusses the use of multiple dietary changes, pre- and probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and immunosuppressant therapy in therapeutic plans.
Dr. Toresson also advocates for client education on antimicrobial resistance and the availability of other therapeutic options as important to changing pet owner demand for antibiotics.
