Abundance of Bacteria and Histopathologic Findings on the Small Intestinal Mucosa of Dogs With Chronic Inflammatory Enteropathies

Recent studies show no evidence of bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine of dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathies, including antibiotic-responsive enteropathy, nor have specific pathogens been identified. Yet some veterinarians are empirically treating with antibiotics to remove pathogenic bacteria or suppress commensal bacteria that may trigger the immune system. 

What is occurring in the small intestine of dogs with chronic enteropathies? A recent study evaluated tissue samples taken from the duodenum and ileum of dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathies and compared them to samples from healthy dogs. 

Histopathologic findings, including characterizations of bacteria and immune cells, were presented during the Microbiome Forum.
