Diet and nutrition can impact immune function through several mechanisms: providing energy for immune function, contributing essential constituents of enzymes and precursors for signaling molecules, and “feeding” the gut microbiota. A number of dietary components, therefore, have been identified as having critical roles in immune function and/or positive effects on immune function. Examples of diet–immune interactions are described, along with an introduction to emerging evidence and areas for future research.
