Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is a common age-related neurodegenerative condition in elderly dogs that decreases quality of life for affected dogs and, by extension, their owners. Evidence exists for relationships among the gut, oral, and nasal microbiome and the development of some neurological diseases, including CDS. The composition of gut and oral microbiomes in dogs changes with advancing age, so now is the time to examine whether manipulation of these microbiota can influence canine brain health.
