La obesidad en perros y gatos para mascotas es de importancia global1-5.
En algunas poblaciones, se ha citado que la prevalencia de animales con sobrepeso y obesidad diagnosticados por veterinarios es de hasta un 65 % en perros y de hasta un 63 % en gatos2,3.
Comprender, identificar y controlar el exceso de peso en las mascotas es vital para su salud. Los estudios demuestran que las mascotas con sobrepeso u obesidad no viven tanto como sus pares más delgados6-9. La obesidad también está relacionada con muchas enfermedades, incluidas la osteoartritis y la diabetes felina10,11.
Sin embargo, las encuestas muestran que muchos dueños de mascotas no perciben el peso de su mascota como un problema3,12,13. Y un poco más de la mitad de los dueños de mascotas informaron que su veterinario inició regularmente una conversación sobre el peso durante la visita anual de sus mascotas4. Esto crea una brecha de conversación crítica para abordar los riesgos del sobrepeso y la obesidad en la salud de las mascotas.
